Audi officially revealed its first mass-produced electric car e-tron in San Francisco a few days ago. The e-tron will start a new chapter for Audi as the company is going to introduce 12 new EV models by 2025 and it will include different body styles from entry-level small hatchbacks to sports cars.

These 12 vehicles will be based on four new modular platforms and the second EV model from Audi will be e-tron Sportback model next year. The company will showcase e-tron GT concept at the Los Angels Auto Show later this year and it will be based on new ‘Premium Performance Electric’ platform.

This new platform is developed with Porsche and it will be used by different manufacturers in the Volkswagen group. Earlier there were some reports that next generation R8 will be an electric sports car and it could be true as the production model could be based on this concept version. The company is also going to expand the plug-in hybrid range.

Peter Mertens, a board member for technical development at Audi AG, has confirmed that all future models wearing four rings will be powered by IC and electric motor combination. These models will come with fast charging capabilities, which will help them to top up in minutes. The e-tron battery can be charged up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes using 150 kW DC high-speed charger.

Audi e-tron is powered by two electric motors with a combined output of 355 hp and 561 Nm, but the boost mode increase power output to 402 hp and 664 Nm, which drop 0-100 kph to below 6 sec from 8 sec on normal mode and top speed is limited to 200 kph. The electric SUV also comes with an advanced regenerative braking system with different modes.

This system can contribute to more than 30 per cent of total range and the e-tron is the world’s first mass production car to come with a camera instead of mirrors. The image from the camera will be displayed on the door pad. Audi is expected to launch the new e-tron in India by the end of 2019.
