Design of seventh generation ES takes inspirations from the new LS; the first Lexus on TNGA platform is dimensionally larger than outgoing model
Lexus officially revealed seventh generation of ES at the Beijing Motor Show. The new ES is based on Toyota’s K platform which is developed from TNGA architecture which the LS is based on. This same platform is already used by Camry and Avalon, but Lexus has improved structural rigidity by extra reinforcements on the chassis.
The ES is lighter than the outgoing model thanks to the use of high strength steel but the company hasn’t mentioned the exact weight loss. Lexus has increased the length of ES by 65 mm, width by 45 mm and height reduced by 5 mm. The wheelbase of ES has been increased by 50 mm and wheels are now pushed to the corners to increase space and stability of ES.
The ES continues to be front wheel drive while most of the competitors are either rear wheel or all wheel drive. The design of seventh generation ES took inspirations from the new generation LS. The spindle grille finished in chrome with Lexus logo in the middle and sleek looking headlamps all gives the impression of smaller LS.
The side is simple with mirrors placed on the door instead of the pillar. The rear design also continues the ES theme with LED tail lamps and new bumper giving a premium feel for the ES. The interior of ES is sporty compared to the exterior as the 12.3 inch infotainment screen and the centre console is angled towards driver.
Lexus has given lots of interior options for ES with wood and leather configuration with latest safety features. Lexus ES will be available in two variants – ES 350 and ES 300h. The ES 350 is powered by 3.5 L V6 engine producing 302 hp and ES 300h is powered by 2.5 L running the Atkinson cycle along with an electric motors producing combined out put of 215 hp.
Both these engines are mated to 8 speed automatic gearbox. For the first time, Lexus is offering ES with F-Sport package which comes with 19 inch alloy wheels, adaptive damper and sport+ driving option for enhanced performance. It is available only with ES 350. Lexus will officially begin sales of ES later this year and we can expect India launch to happen next year.
