2017 Skoda Octavia vRS sports eye-catching cosmetic upgrades with added performance; has claimed top speed of 250 kmph
Skoda India was announced to have four new products in the pipeline for launch this year alongside investments towards strengthening its dealership networks and after-sales support. Of the four vehicles, the Onyx limited edition Octavia had already been launched. While the all-new Kodiaq SUV has just entered the market, the re-entry of RS badge in the new Octavia has also happened prior to that with price of Rs. 24.62 lakh (ex-showroom).
While the MQB platform-based Kodiaq global SUV showed its originality with a premiere in Berlin in September 2016, the official pictures of the 2017 Octavia facelift surfaced on the internet just a while later. With the RS-spec Octavia is here now, it was already on sale for overseas markets and obviously gets benefitted from the facelifted Octavia. Underlining its popularity, the first batch has been sold out containing 250 units while other customers will have to wait until 2018 to get their RS delivered.
The 2017 Skoda Octavia RS features dual split adaptive headlamp units and revised front grille as seen on the regular model but with a brimmed up sportier appearance along side LED DRLs, LED foglights and RS logo. It is hard to judge whether the new front face would attract many but we would not come to a conclusion until we see it running on roads.
The new Octavia RS is an apparent crowd pleaser with the 17-inch alloy wheels (or it could be better) and newly designed sporty rim pattern, bigger tyres, honeycomb lattice design for bigger air dams and an aggressive front bumper setup. It sits 15 mm closer to the ground on a 30 mm wider rear track. The black-painted pillars and wing mirror covers are part of the visual attraction as well.
As we would crave, the rear end come adorned with sleek boot lid spoiler, spurred up C-shaped tail lamp design and bigger chrome tipped exhaust tips on either side of rear bumper. The interior in foreign markets sports equipment like 9.2-inch touchscreen Columbus infotainment system with smartphone integration, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, customisable key, heated steering wheel, etc.
By being the RS version, contrast seat stitching and upmarket touches cannot be neglected. It has an all-black interior with seats upholstered in either leather and fabric or Alcantara combo. Elsewhere, the existing Octavia RS gets power from a 2.0-litre turbocharged TDI diesel motor making 184 horsepower, 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol developing 230 PS at 5,500-6,200 rpm and 350 Nm at 1,500-4,500 rpm and there is also a more powerful RS245 version. Only the 230 PS version is sold in India and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission helping to reach top speed of 250 kmph.
The RS245 can do 0-100 kmph in just 6.7 seconds and can top out electronically-limited 250 kmph – making it the fastest Skoda in series production but India-spec version should be capable of 0-100 kmph in 6.8 seconds.
Other important features are sports seats with Rs logo, integrated head restraints, three-spoke multifunctional sports steering wheel and leather gear knob with Rs logo, tailgate spoiler, specific rear bumper design, LED rear light clusters, rear diffuser with a strip of red reflectors, stainless steel tailpipes, etc.
