A total of 17.7 million two-wheelers were sold in India in 2016; registering 48,000 units every day
India becomes the largest two-wheeler market in the world beating China. In 2016, a total of 17.7 million two-wheelers were sold in the country, which means around 48,000 units were sold every day. On the other hand, Chinese market saw 16.8 million units sold in 2016. Interestingly, gearless scooters made a large contribution to this achievement of Indian two-wheeler industry.
While Hero MotoCorp is the biggest two-wheeler brand in the country thanks to its range of commuter models, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd leads the scooter segment with its very popular and bestselling Activa range. The Japanese brand says 35% of its customers are women, which concludes that women buyers have significantly contributed in the growth of Indian two-wheeler industry in recent years.

India’s rise to top of the list has been successful because of the declining sales of two-wheelers in Chinese market. Few years back, number of yearly sales reached to 25 million in the country, but increasing car sales and curb on petrol powered two-wheelers in major cities have impacted the sales in the country. However, electric two-wheeler sales have increased in China.
In India, demands for personal mobility options are very high. Along with this, easier finance options, range of fuel efficient and affordable two-wheelers, improved road condition in both rural and urban areas along with rising incomes of people have helped the two-wheeler industry to grow fast in India. Also, demands for premium models have increased significantly. As more models are pouring in the market, the growth is expected to continue in near future.
