Hyundai’s new small car to launch in H2 2018; will receive in-house developed AMT technology

Putting an end to the rumor Hyundai has announced that its upcoming small car that is expected to launch in India in the second half of 2018 won’t be named as Santro. It was thought that the legendary Santro badge will be revived through this small family car. But Hyundai says the car will get a different name keeping the current market scenario in mind.

This small Hyundai car will arrive longer and wider compared to the Santro. There will be more space on offer for the occupant as well as larger boot storage as well. The hatchback is likely to get power from the 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine, the same unit does duty under the hood of Hyundai Grand i10.

The new Hyundai hatchback will mark the debut of the South Korean automaker’s in-house built new AMT technology that would be introduced to other cars as well. As the brand has vowed to introduce dual-pedal technology across its entire range in India by 2020, the upcoming small car would play a crucial role in that strategy.

Upon launch, this new Hyundai hatchback will be positioned between the Eon and Grand i10. In terms of styling, it would carry some crossover like appearance that will enhance its appeal. Upon arrival, it would lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Tata Tiago and the Renault Kwid. Expect it to be priced very competitively at around Rs. 4 lakh (ex-showroom).

Before the Korean auto major launches this hatchback in India, we might see it being unveiled at the upcoming 2018 New Delhi Auto Expo in February next year. Speaking about the Hyundai Santro, it has played the most vital role in making Hyundai the second biggest car brand of India. Even after being discontinued too, Hyundai Santro hasn’t lost its appeal.

As we reported earlier, the company has plans to revive the car with new design, more upmarket and advanced features. Now, with Hyundai cleared that its upcoming small car won’t be new Santro, it is to be seen if the brand brings back legendary hatchback in new avatar in near future.
