New Maruti Suzuki Wagon R VS New Hyundai Santro Comparison

The 2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R takes on the New-Gen Hyundai Santro and we are comparing both models to find out which one offers more features

Maruti Suzuki officially launched the 2019 Wagon R recently in India and it is going to compete against the new Hyundai Santro, which was introduced late last year. In this article, we are comparing each variant of Santro and Wagon R to see who has the upper hand in terms of features.

2019 Wagon R Vs New Santro Dimension Comparison

The 2019 Wagon R is based on the Heartect platform and the company has increased dimensions compared to its predecessor. The New Santro is based on the revised BA platform of Grand i10 and the dimensions between both these models are closer. The Wagon R measures 3655 mm in length, 1620 mm in width, 1675 mm in height and wheelbase is 2435 mm.

The new Santro, on the other hand, measures 3610 mm in length, 1645 mm in width, 1560 mm in height and 2400 mm in wheelbase. The new Wagon R is longer and taller than Santro but the latter is wider. The wheelbase of the new Wagon R is 40 mm more than the Santro, which could result in more space inside the cabin. The boot space of Wagon R is 341 L compared to 235 L of Santo. Overall, the 2019 Wagon R is larger than new Santro.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 L vs Hyundai Santro 1.1 L Engine Comparison

The 2019 Wagon R retains the same 1.0 L K-Series engine from the earlier model. But the company has made some changes for the tunning to improve efficiency. The 998 cc engine produces 67 PS of power at 5,500 rpm and 90 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. The new Santro is powered by a new 1086 cc engine producing 69 PS at 5,500 rpm and 84 Nm at 4,500 rpm.

Both these engines come with the option of either 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. The new Santro has the displacement advantage over the Wagon R 1.0L and it produces 2 PS more power while the Wagon R produces 6 Nm of more torque at 1000 rpm lower.

The performance between both these engines will be almost similar but the higher torque output might give a slight advantage for Wagon R. According to ARAI, the new Santro returns 20.3 Km/l but the Wagon R offers more efficiency as the hatchback returns 22.5 Km/l.

2019 Wagon R 1.2 L Vs New Santro 1.1 L Engine Comparison

For the first time, Maruti Suzuki is offering the 2019 Wagon R with a 1.2 L K-Series engine, which does duty on so many other models of the company and it will certainly improve the performance of the tall boy hatchback. The 1.2 L engine puts out 82 PS at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm at 4,300 rpm. The transmission options are same 5-speed manual and AMT.

The 1.1 L engine of new Santro produces less power and torque compared to the 1.2 L unit of Wagon R. The 1.2 L K-Series on 2019 Wagon R returns 21.5 Km/l, which is more than the 20.3 Km/l of Santro. Overall, the bigger engine on 2019 Wagon R delivers more performance along with better fuel efficiency when compared to the Santro.

Wagon R Lxi 1.0 L Vs Santro Era 1.1 L Comparison

The entry-level Lxi variant of new Wagon R gets 1.0 L K-Series engine and it comes with body coloured bumpers along with roof antenna and 13-inch steel wheels while the interior features include front power windows, manual AC, reclining and sliding front seats, front cabin lamps, low fuel warning, gear shift indicator, fuel consumption, distance to empty, headlamp on warning and door ajar warning lamp.

The company has given lots of safety features like driver side airbags with an optional passenger side airbag, ABS with EBD, Seat belt reminder, speed alert system, rear parking sensors, central locking and child rear door lock.

The Era variant of new Santo come with body coloured bumpers with 13-inch wheels and hubcaps. The interior comes with front power windows, remote tailgate open, remote fuel lid open, manual AC with rear AC vents, advanced 6.5-inch multi-information display with dual trip meter, average fuel consumption and speed, distance to empty, service reminder and time elapsed.

The safety features include driver airbag, ABS with EBD, child safety door lock and engine immobiliser. Both models are loaded with features as the Wagon R offers more safety features but the Santro offer segment first rear-AC vents along with a fully loaded MID screen also.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon VXi Vs Hyundai Santro Magna Comparison

The Vxi variant of new Wagon R comes loaded with lots more features as the company has given full wheel caps for the 13-inch wheels along with body coloured door handles and OVRMs with electric adjust.

The interior gets steering wheel adjust, front passenger side vanity mirror and 60:40 split seat for the second row. Some of the comfort features include remote keyless entry, four-door power windows, Smart Play Dock, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and Aux-in also. The Vxi comes with all the safety features from Lxi along with Speed Sensitive Auto Door Lock and Security Alarm.

The Magna variant of the new Santro comes with chrome finish for the front grille while the interior gets optional black colour with Diana green colour inserts. The company has also added four-door power windows, 2-din integrated audio system with two speakers, Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in, Multi-function steering wheel and Micro Antenna.

Hyundai has given the same set of safety features from the Era variant. Both models are head to head but the Wagon R offers more safety features but misses out on steering mounted controls and an integrated audio system compared to Santro.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon Zxi Vs Hyundai Santro Asta Comparison

The top end variant of both models come loaded with features like touch screen infotainment system (new Santro touchscreen is slightly larger compared to Wagon R) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, steering mounted audio and phone controls, front fog lamps, dual airbags, ABS with EB, Speed-Sensing Auto door lock and Impact sensing door lock.

Both models also get 14-inch wheel misses out alloy wheels while Hyundai offer reverse camera in Santro, which the Wagon R misses out but Maruti offers defogger and both gets rear wash and wiper also.

The new Santro comes with four speakers for the audio system but the Wagon R get only two. The Zxi variant of new Wagon R only comes with 1.2 L engine and it gets both manual and AMT but the Santro gets manual only as AMT is offered in Magna and Sportz.
