Hyundai Kona EV comes with a claimed electric range of 452 km on a single charge and is priced aggressively in the market

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has today launched the electric version of Kona SUV in the domestic market. Priced at Rs. 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory), it is the first pure electric passenger car to grace India from Hyundai and offers ARAI-certified claimed range of 452 km on a single charge using 39.2 kWh Lithium-ion Polymer battery pack.
The Kona Electric comes adorning a stylish exterior with the unique front grille comprising intaglio patterns. The split headlamp setup found also in the conventional Venue is accompanied by an electric charging port seamlessly integrated into the grille area.
Aerodynamically beneficial flared fenders, LED Daytime Running Lights, sleek composite bi-function LED headlights, contrast finish to the wave-like elements on the sides, inverse wave-form design elements, roof rails, 17-inch wheels, rear skid plate and spoiler, and sporty rear brake lights are some of the notable features.

The coefficient of drag stands at just 0.29 Cd due to the carefully sculpted design. Hyundai Kona Electric is sold in Phantom Black, Marina Blue, Polar White, Typhoon White as well as dual-tone Polar White with Phantom Black roof for the addition of Rs.20,000. Only Marina Blue and Polar White will be initially available.
The zero-emission Hyundai Kona is equipped with 2.8 kW portable charger having in-cable control box (ICCB) and it can be plugged right into the regular wall sockets with an estimated charging time of 19 hours to reach 100 per cent. The onboard charger is capable of 7.2 kW rate of charge with 452 km electric range.
Using the DC fast charger, the Kona EV can be replenished from zero to 80 per cent in just 57 minutes provided the charging port is CCS Type II. The 7.2 kW Level II charger takes up to 6 hours and 10 minutes as this AC wall-mounted unit can be installed at home or office.

The four driving modes available are Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport as the energy extracted and other parameters are altered based on the driver’s requirement using specific settings on each mode. The Kona EV measures a length 4,180 mm, width of 1,800 mm, height of 1,570 mm and has 2,600 mm wheelbase.

It gets 3-year/unlimited km warranty and for the high voltage battery, Hyundai offers 8 years/up to 1,60,000 km warranty as standard. The Kona is brought into the country via CKD route from South Korea and assembled locally at Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu. Hyundai claims 80 per cent lower running costs compared to regular petrol cars.

Constructed on ultra high strength steel, the Hyundai Kona EV possesses several high-tech and safety features. As for safety, it gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, VSM, HAC, reversing camera with guidelines, TPMS, virtual engine sound system and disc brakes on all wheels.
Other equipment includes paddle shifters for adjustable regenerative braking, smart eco pedal guide, utility mode, 10-way powered driver seat with lumbar support, FATC, electronic parking brake with auto hold, heated and ventilated front seats, shift-by-wire tech and electric sunroof.
The 17.77 cm touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice recognition is at the heart of the interior operations. The dashboard has premium soft-touch finish while the seats are upholstered in leather and the pedals are all metal for upscale nature. The digital instrument cluster has supervision and it shows charge management, energy info and consumption.
