Hyundai Kona electric SUV for India will have 350 km range on a single charge; the company will look at exporting the model at a later stage

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has lined up several new launches this year. Chief among them is the QXi subcompact SUV, which could be called by the production name Styx, expected to make world premiere in April at the New York International Auto Show before going on sale likely in the middle of this year.

As part of showcasing its technology prowess, the South Korean auto major will also introduce the electrified version of the globally popular Kona SUV. A recent report indicates that the production of the Kona electric SUV will begin in the second half of 2019 at Sriperumbudur facility near Chennai.

At the Tamil Nadu investor summit, Hyundai has announced that it will be investing Rs. 7,000 crore in its production base and part of the money will go into the manufacturing of the all-electric Kona SUV. BC Dutta, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Hyundai has confirmed that the Kona EV will go on sale in H2 2019.

Moreover, he stated that it will have a driving range of 350 km on a single charge and the charging time taken will be around one hour. This likely means, India will get the 39 kW Lithium-ion battery pack with the fast charger while the top speed will be 155 kmph and the 0-100 kmph acceleration time will be claimed in under 10 seconds.

He also mentioned that initially the Kona electric SUV’s production would be focussed on Indian customers while at a later time the company will make moves to export the model. The additional investment is said to give employment to 1,500 people at the manufacturing plant and it will help increase capacity from 7 lakh units to 8 lakh units.

Hyundai’s intention with bringing in e-mobility solutions for India was evident since last year as Nexo FCEV was showcased at the India-Korean Business Summit in New Delhi, and the Kona EV debuted at the MOVE Summit as well as displayed at the Brilliant kids Motor Show 2018.
