Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Makes India Premiere At 2018 Auto Expo

Hyundai has showcased the Ioniq Hybrid as part of realigning its strategy to enter vehicles in the upper segments with non-conventional powertrains

The government is allowing more electric vehicles on the road with tax exemption as part of reducing air pollution and achieve 2030 EV mission. Hyundai has unveiled the hybrid version of Ioniq at the ongoing Auto Expo as automakers are responding to the electric transformation. It is one of the highly successful and versatile products from the brand globally and here is everything you need to know about it:

The Ioniq concept was first revealed in December 2015 as the first all-electric concept from Hyundai. It has a supple platform as customers choose from three powertrain options available namely electric, plug-in gasoline/electric hybrid or gasoline/electric hybrid.

Hyundai Ioniq is sold in five trim levels for the South Korea market: I, I+, N, N+ and Q initially as petrol-electric hybrid variant. It made European premiere at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show before appearing at NY Auto Show.

Hyundai-Ioniq-Side.jpgThe plug-in hybrid version with estimated 50 km electric range and comes powered by a 8.9kWh lithium-ion battery pack could be used for India. But the chances of petrol/electric hybrid look to be even higher and it has indeed been showcased in Greater Noida.

The electric motor producing 42 hp is linked with a 1.6-litre Kappa GDi four-cylinder petrol engine which is good enough to make a maximum power of 102 hp and 147 Nm peak torque. The combined power output of 144 hp and 315 Nm torque are delivered through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In its hybrid version, the Ioniq has a rated fuel efficiency of 29.41 kmpl and CO2 emissions of 79 g/km.

Hyundai will be targeting locally assembly of the Ioniq and it could be brought in through a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) unit. It could be priced aggressively at around Rs. 25-30 lakh which is far cheaper than the Toyota Prius.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Design and Exterior

Having a similar profile as the Toyota Prius, its styling takes inspiration from the latest fluidic design language. More than half of the construction has used Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and lighter aluminium materials to bring down the weight for improved fuel economy.

Some of the key design features present are signature hexagonal grille, C-shaped DRLs, LED headlamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, all-black interior theme with matte-silver accents, etc.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Interior and Features

The flat-bottom steering wheel representing the Ioniq is sporty and the blue accents are in coherence with the Korean brand’s ‘Blue Drive’ movement for zero-emission vehicles. Inside the cabin, the Ioniq consists of a 5.0-inch colour LCD touchscreen infotainment system and a slew of other functions and a separate 4.2-inch LCD colour screen on the dashboard.
