Hyundai Elite i20 Outsells Grand i10 On 2018 Annual Sales Chart

Hyundai Elite i20 Outsells Grand i10 -1

Annual sales data shows that the Hyundai Elite i20 has overtaken the more affordable Hyundai Grand i10 on the sales chart of 2018

Usually, the more affordable models in a carmaker’s far outsell the pricier siblings. However, this time around, this trend seems to be changing. Not only has the Maruti Dzire surpassed the Maruti Alto on the annual car sales in 2018 but even the Hyundai Elite i20 has outperformed the Hyundai Grand i10.

As per the data issued by SIAM, Hyundai Motor India Ltd dispatched 1,34,249 units of the Hyundai Grand i10 in 2018. In comparison, 1,54,747 units were sold in 2017. On the other hand, this year, the company sold 1,41,104 units of the Elite i20 in 2018 as compared to 1,34,103 units sold in 2017. The third most popular Hyundai model last year was the Creta, whose sales stood at 1,20,905 units, a remarkable improvement over 1,05,484 units sold in 2017.

From the above numbers, it is quite clear that more new car buyers are choosing the Elite i20 over its more affordable sibling. This is mainly because the Grand i10 has started feeling quite old and doesn’t have the freshness that one associates with the rivals like the Maruti Swift. On the contrary, the Hyundai Elite i20 received a mid-cycle facelift in February 2018, and the refreshed car still feels quite fresh in comparison with its lower-priced sibling.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd is currently working on the next-gen Grand i10, which should launch in August this year. The next-gen i10 will be bigger and will feature the company’s latest design language. It will also get BSVI-compliant engines and more safety features across all trims.

The next-gen Hyundai Grand i10 will be underpinned by a new version of the current model’s BA platform. The engine options will include a BSVI-compliant version of the current model’s 1.2-litre petrol engine. Also, with the demand for diesel-powered cars on a decline, the company might skip offering a diesel engine option.

The transmission options for the 1.2-litre petrol engine will include a 5-speed gearbox and a 5-speed Smart Auto that will replace the 4-speed torque-converter auto of the current car. The all-new Hyundai Grand i10 should be able to regain its lost popularity.
