More than half a million Hyundai and Kia cars are affected in North American markets due to brake light problem

Hyundai and Kia have issued a massive recall program to fix faulty brake lights in several of their cars. More than half a million cars have been recalled in North American markets due to the faulty brake light. Among the affected cars are Hyundai Elantra and Kia Fortes.

While Hyundai has recalled 390,000 units of Elantra that were built between 2013 and 2014, Kia recalled 134,000 units of Forte that were manufactured between 2012 and 2014. In Canada too Hyundai has recalled 103,556 units of Elantra sedan. All these vehicles come with faulty brake lights that may not go out once the brake pedal is released. The polymer stopper pad between brake pedal arm and light switch is probably detoriated in the affected cars leading the switch staying on even when the pedal is not pressed.

It is not clear if the India-spec Hyundai Elantras are also affected due to the faulty brake light issue. The faults in all these affected cars will be inspected and fixed by the authorised dealerships without any charge to the customers. Hyundai will initiate the program from 8th February 2018, while Kia’s recall program will be kicked in from 30th January.

Hyundai launched the new Elantra in Indian market last year at a starting price of Rs. 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The car received pretty good response from the buyers with its stylish and upmarket stance that is capable of grabbing attention at the very first glimpse.
