The Hyundai Aura comes with a choice of three engine options, including a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.2-litre diesel, and a sporty 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as well

Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL) recently launched the Aura at a starting price of Rs 5.80 lakh (ex-showroom). The Aura replaces the Xcent as Hyundai’s sub-compact sedan offering for private buyers, as the latter will only be sold to fleet operators in the country from now onwards.

Hyundai is offering the Aura sedan with three different BS6-compliant engines, which include a 1.2-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol motor, a 1.2-litre diesel unit, and a sportier 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine as well.

While the 1.2-litre petrol engine (83 hp/114 Nm) is the same as the Grand i10 Nios, the 1.2-litre diesel engine, which makes 75 hp power and 190 Nm torque, will go on to become the smallest capacity diesel engine in the BS6 era.

However, the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol T-GDi engine is the one we are here to talk about. This is the same engine that is on offer with the Venue, but in a slightly lower state of tune. The engine makes 100 hp of maximum power, and 172 Nm peak torque.

While the 1.2-litre petrol and diesel mills can be coupled with either a 5-speed manual gearbox, or an AMT, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol can only be had with the former. Hyundai offers the Aura in 5 trims, including E, S, SX SX+ and SX(O), but the 1.0-litre unit is only available with the SX+ variant.

As compared to the other variants of the car, the turbo variant gets a glossy black surround for the large cascading front grille; which also gets a ‘turbo’ badging embedded in it. The regular Aura comes with dual tone interiors, but the sporty turbo trim gets an all black interior theme, paired with contrasting red inserts.

Hyundai has priced the Aura 1.0-litre turbo-petrol at a price of Rs 8.55 lakh, while the top-end diesel automatic Aura costs Rs 9.23 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The Aura competes against the likes of other B-segment sedans including Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Ford Aspire and Honda Amaze.
