Honda’s strategy to take the pole position in Indian two-wheeler market by 2020 will benefit its global business significantly

India is clearly giving Honda a reason to smile. The Japanese two-wheeler brand has seen the country contributing 32% of its total global sales, as registered in September. A large chunk of its sales volume in India is attributed to the Honda Activa scooter range that became bestselling two-wheeler of the country back in May 2015. It even overtook the hero Splendor that has been dominating the country market for nearly two decades.

India is currently the number one two-wheeler market in the world in terms of volume sales and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is clearly strengthening its grip here. The brand aims to become the top selling two-wheeler brand in the country by 2020 and in this attempt the company has to beat its erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp.

As Honda is registering increasing sales number in the domestic market, it is clear that the brand is steadily moving towards its goal. Interestingly, In the FY14, HMSI’s contribution to the company’s global sales was 21% and in the second quarter of FY18, the contribution rose by 11% ending up at 32%. Since FY15, the contribution percentage has been increasing gradually.

India is clearly the number one market for Honda at present. The two-wheeler manufacturer aims to increase the sales volume here significantly and in an attempt to achieve that goal, the Japanese brand is gearing up to launch several new and premium products here, both in the motorcycle segment and in the scooter segment as well.
