Honda Partners SenseTime To Develop Future Autonomous Driving Tech

Honda is expected to use SenseTime’s expertise in developing artificial intelligence; the duo will expand partnership in robotics

Japanese auto giant Honda has partnered with Chinese technology startup SenseTime to develop artificial intelligence for the future self driving vehicles of the brand. SenseTime has been a leading company working on object recognition technology and on the other hand, Honda is ambitious to roll out driverless cars in coming future.

Combining each other’s technology Honda and SenseTime will ensure deep learning skills for the Honda’s AI and autonomous techs. Together, the two companies will ensure self driving vehicles operate safely in urban areas. The two brands have agreed to ink a five year joint research and development project. The partnership will specially focus on the areas like scene understanding, risk prediction and action planning; which are very important for a driverless car.

As the automaker says, the jointly developed AI will gauge the urban motoring scenarios and respond to them in right way. Interestingly, Honda is planning to introduce cars with level 4 autonomous driving technology by 2020 and this partnership could play key role in that strategy. Honda also inked partnerships with other companies like Google Waymo, Grab in South Asia and Israel’s DRIVE as well.

Overall, it is clear that Honda is pretty serious about its driverless car project and the brand is leaving no stones unturned to make that successful. Honda and SenseTime are expected to expand their partnership in the field of robotics in coming future.

Earlier this year, the Japanese automobile giant launched its new innovation lab in Tokyo that is named as R&D Center X. This lab is dedicated to the research and development of robotics, alternative energy and artificial intelligence. In recent past, the brand unveiled couple of exciting futuristic zero emission all-electric concepts, which are expected to come in production guise by 2019.

The small electric vehicle concept called as Urban EV concept is claimed to come with emotional intelligence. This mini urban car is expected to be benefitted from the technology to be jointly developed by Honda and SenseTime. Not only cars, but future Honda motorcycles too will come equipped with riding assistant, which is likely to be developed in association with SenseTime.
