Honda, Toyota and Nissan joined hands to set up a massive hydrogen refuelling network in Japan; could boost fuel cell vehicle sales

Honda is heavily emphasising on hydrogen fuel cell technology in its green car drive. The Japanese car manufacturer has already developed hydrogen fuel cell powered cars. It has filed for patent of hydrogen fuel cell powered bike as well and now, it has joined hands with other two auto giants Toyota and Nissan to set up a massive hydrogen refuelling network in Japan.

With this widespread hydrogen refuelling network, the three auto manufacturers are expecting to see a significant sales boost for its fuel-cell vehicles. Not only these three auto majors but this project also involves financial institutions along with oil and gas companies. Interestingly, this initiative comes in line with Japan government’s ‘Strategic Road Map for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells’.

The Japanese government is aiming to boost the number of hydrogen refilling stations across the country to 160 by the 2020 in order to promote green mobility. Among these, Honda will be responsible for building 80 fuel stations. Also, around 40,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are expected to be sold in Japanese domestic market by the end of this decade. With such a huge refuelling network, infrastructure would be no bar for the expansion of hydrogen fuel cell powered mobility.

As we reported earlier, Honda is keeping all the options open in its drive towards green mobility. While several auto manufacturers across the world are focusing only on pure electric vehicles to achieve zero emission mobility, Honda is keen to continue with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles along with battery powered all-electric models.

Not only Honda, but Toyota and Nissan too are keen to keep different alternative power source options open for their green mobility drive. Honda has garnered pretty good attention with its hydrogen fuel cell powered model Clarity, which is presently the only production fuel cell vehicle in the world.

Not only in the four wheeler space, Honda is keen to roll out hydrogen fuel cell bikes in near future. This is why, the brand has filed for the patent and we can expect it to be unveiled sometime by 2020.
