Honda Becomes Third Largest Two-Wheeler Exporter Beating Hero

Honda registered highest YoY growth of 41.72% in FY 2016-17; Bajaj Auto tops the chart despite 16.50% sales decline

Honda has beaten the king of commuter motorcycles Hero MotoCorp in the two-wheeler export chart in last fiscal and came up at third position. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer has registered a very impressive YoY export growth of 41.72% in the FY 2016-17. During the last fiscal, HMSI shipped 283,163 units to overseas markets compared to 200,145 units in the previous fiscal. Also, it remains the top scooter exporter from India with 36% of its total export volume attributing to scooters.

Bajaj Auto remains on top of the chart with 1,218,541 units exported in FY 2016-17, compared to 1,459,295 units in previous financial year. YoY export for the Bajaj Auto has declined by 16.50%. TVS Motors is positioned at the second spot with a marginal growth of 1.56%. The Houser-based two-wheeler manufacturer exported 364,112 units in last fiscal compared to 358,515 units during FY 2015-16. It shipped 44,572 units of scooters, more than 2.99 lakh motorcycles and around 20,152 units of mopeds.

Royal Enfield is experiencing success in overseas markets alongside the domestic market. The company has registered 31.60% growth during last fiscal as it exported 15,383 units compared to 9,363 units in last fiscal. Currently, the Chennai-based motorcycle manufacturer ships its products to more than 50 countries including a large number of Asian and European countries.

Hero MotoCorp is the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in terms of sales volume in the country market. Beaten by Honda, it stepped down to fourth place with export figure of 180,391 units in last fiscal. In the previous fiscal, it shipped 210,239 units. Mahindra Two-Wheelers has seen impressive increase in export, as the number grew by 27.90%, while Yamaha and Suzuki registered 11.09% and 10.95% YoY export growth during last FY.

Overall, around 12% of the total two-wheelers produced in India were shipped to global markets. In total, around 23.39 lakh two-wheelers were exported during FY 2016-17, which marked 5.78% decline over the previous fiscal. However, the scooter segment saw highest ever export at more than 2.93 lakh units.
