MG Motor is vying to make a huge impact in the domestic market and it has officially unveiled its first product for India today and it will go on sale next month across the country. Dubbed the Hector, the premium SUV will take on some of the established rivals in the SUV space such as Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier, Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV500, upcoming Kia SP2i and the likes.

The production of the Hector has already begun at the brand’s manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat that has an initial capacity of 80,000 units. The storied British firm currently owned by China’s SAIC that helped in the major revival is looking to present its products in an upscale manner in India.

The Hector SUV has a premium dual-tone exterior with sharp design cues as well as plenty of chrome accents on the high-spec models while silver grille inserts can be seen on the low-level variants. The premium SUV will derive power from a 2.0-litre FCA-sourced four-cylinder diesel engine, which is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 170 horsepower and 350 Nm. It is the same unit that can be found in the Jeep Compass and will also be used in the upcoming seven-seater Harrier (Buzzard) bound for late 2019.

The powertrain will be connected to a six-speed manual transmission and is expected to get an automatic unit at a later stage. The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine develops 142 horsepower and 250 Nm and it will get a six-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic as an option.

MG will also offer a 48V hybrid system with the petrol engine option. The diesel version of the vehicle returns a maximum of 17.41 km/l while the petrol manual returns a maximum fuel efficiency of 14.16 km/l and DCT AT returns a maximum fuel efficiency of 13.96 km/l.

The MG Hector will be available in four trim levels i.e Style, Super, Smart and Sharp. Both the petrol and diesel engines are available in all 4 trims and in total, there are thirteen variants of the vehicle.
