Toyota Glanza and Maruti Suzuki Baleno share the same DNA, but how do they stack against each other in terms of price and specs? Let’s find out

Toyota India has finally launched the much talked about Glanza premium hatchback in India, at a starting price of Rs 7.22 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Glanza is based on the Maruti Suzuki’s successful Baleno hatch sold via the Nexa range of dealership. There has been much discussion about why Toyota rebadged the Baleno to sell through Toyota dealerships. But that’s a topic for some other day. Let’s see how the Baleno and Glanza are different from each other.

The Toyota Glanza has been launched only in four variants including two grades and at the first glance, the price difference between the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Toyota Glanza base versions seems huge. Here’s the price range of Maruti Suzuki Baleno, For reference, we will take only petrol engines as Glanza is available in the same (all prices, ex-showroom)-

Baleno vs Glanza Maruti Baleno Toyota Glanza
Baleno Sigma Rs. 5.58 Lakh NA
Baleno Delta Rs. 6.37 Lakh NA
Baleno Zeta Rs. 6.98 Lakh NA
Baleno Delta Smart Hybrid Rs. 7.25 Lakh NA
Baleno Alpha Rs. 7.58 Lakh Rs. 7.58 lakh (V)
Baleno Delta AT Rs. 7.69 Lakh NA
Zeta Smart Hybrid Rs. 7.87 Lakh Rs. 7.22 lakh (G)
Baleno Zeta CVT Rs. 8.30 Lakh Rs. 8.30 lakh (G)
Baleno Alpha CVT Rs. 8.90 Lakh Rs. 8.90 lakh (V)

In comparison, the Glanza is being offered in two grades only and corresponds to the Delta and Alpha trims. Which means, in contrast to the Baleno which is available base Sigma version, the Glanza starts at the ‘G’ MT variant which gets a DualJet Smart Hybrid engine, like the Baleno’s Zeta MT Smart Hybrid.

Comparing with Baleno’s Dualjet Zeta Smart Hybrid, Glanza G Smart Hybrid is cheaper by Rs. 55,000 which is a big price difference and it offers features like the push start button, smart keyless entry, telescopic steering and driver seat height adjustment as standard which only available in Zeta variant of Baleno.

Talking about the specs now, the Toyota Glanza comes equipped with two engine options, both of which are BS VI compliant petrol engines – a 1.2-litre K12B unit producing 83 hp of power and 113 Nm of torque and a 1.2-litre K12C DualJet engine with a mild-hybrid system that produces 90 hp of power and 113 Nm of torque. Both the engines are also powering the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, with the same configuration and output. However, the Baleno also gets a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine too.

While Glanza gets two gearbox options – a 5-speed manual and a CVT unit which is available only with the K12B-engine. In terms of the mileage, the Toyota Glanza K12B petrol unit with Manual gearbox delivers 21.01 kmpl, while the K12C Smart Hybrid is rated at 23.87 kmpl. Lastly, the K12B with CVT delivers 19.56 kmpl. As the engine and gearbox, the mileage figures are identical to Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

In terms of features, the Toyota Glanza get automatic climate control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, navigation and voice command functionality, auto headlights with follow-me functionality among others. In terms of the safety, it gets standard dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking camera and more.

The Toyota Glanza will be offered with the best-in-class three years/ 1 Lakh km standard warranty. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno offers two years/ 40000 km warranty only.
After the joint venture between Toyota-Suzuki on a global level, the Glanza is the first product to roll out and will be made by Suzuki Motor Corporation at their Gujarat plant from where it will be supplied globally. Suzuki will also supply the Vitara Brezza, Ciaz and the Ertiga to Toyota. On the other hand, Toyota will be helping Maruti Suzuki to get hybrid systems and a C-segment MPV.
