Groupe Renault To Launch 8 New EVs By 2022

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance will introduce 12 electrified vehicles by 2022; 15 models to receive autonomous driving technology

Groupe Renault has unveiled its plan till 2022, under which the French auto major aims to increase production by 40% and it also plans to emphasise on the zero emission pure electric vehicles, hybrid models and plug-in hybrid models as well. Under this strategy, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi together will launch 8 new electric vehicles by 2022.

The three auto makers will launch 12 electrified models including hybrid and plug in hybrid vehicles. Apart from that, there will be 15 models with different levels of autonomous driving technology, ranging between Level 2 and Level 4 autonomous system. Christened as ‘Drive The Future 2017-2022’ plan, this strategy focuses on doubling the sales for the group outside European market.

Under this six-year plan, Groupe Renault aims to increase its sales up to more than 5 million units compared to the 3.47 million units sold in 2016 in the overseas markets outside Europe. With the increases production volume, sales hike around the world, Groupe Renault aims to become a major player in the world automobile market.

The company believes that the strength of three automakers, futuristic technologies, electrified powertrain and autonomous driving tech will help it to achieve the target. The three automakers are supposed to build electric vehicles on shared architecture that will help the brand to reduce production cost and increase profitability. So far, 80% of the Groupe Renault products are likely to use common platforms by the end of 2022.

We can expect India to play an important role in this strategy. Considering India’s goal to introduce zero emission pure electric mobility by 2030, Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are likely to roll out several new products in the country with electric powertrain. One of them is certainly the new Nissan Leaf EV that has been already unveiled few weeks ago. Apart from that, Renault and Mitsubishi too are likely to launch some EVs here in near future.
