SIAM Chief Abhay Firodia says Indian government is definitive about its EV goal but there is no clear roadmap yet

Mission EV 2030 is currently the most discussed topic in domestic auto industry as the Indian government has cleared its ambitious and futuristic plan to implement pure electric mobility across the country by the end of next decade. But, is it possible to achieve the target in time? SIAM president and Force Motors chairman Abhay Firodia believes full transition to electric mobility by 2030 is not possible.

SIAM chief welcomes the government strategy to introduce zero emission pure electric mobility by 2030. But, as union road and transport minister Nitin Gadkari has said the industry to hasten the move to electric mobility or get bulldozed, Mr. Firodia believes such statement would hurt the constructive co-operative move towards achieving the target.

Mr. Firodia earlier said the industry needs at least five years to adopt BS-VI emission norm. But, the Indian auto industry has much lesser time than that as the new stricter emission norm is due to be implemented across the country from April 2020. Ford Motors boss believes many people in the auto industry and component industry will spend sleepless nights to achieve the goal in time.

The testing agencies too will face tough time with such short time to adopt the new emission norm. While the strategy to adopt all-electric mobility by 2030 has received positive response from the Indian auto industry, there is great confusion regarding the implementation. This is why the auto manufacturers and automobile component makers are constantly asking the government o a clear roadmap to achieve the target. However, the government is yet to provide such roadmap.

SIAM chief also believes that with the implementation of electric mobility, dealers and maintenance workshops will face great trouble, as millions of workers employed in the garages will become idle. The component industry too will face some trouble, but they have to work harder to adopt the new mobility solution.
