Currently the Ford EcoSport 4×4 is not offered in India but International markets get it with a 2.0 L petrol engine

India is one of the manufacturing hubs for Ford EcoSport and the company export EcoSport to lots of countries including USA. Usually manufacturers tend to test export models in India for hot weather or to gather data for future products. Ford is testing a US spec EcoSport and the test mule was spotted in Pondicherry.

The model spotted was mid-spec SE variant of EcoSport and compared to Indian model, the major difference is the lack of spare wheel mounted at the rear as Ford ditched it from International models due to customer feedback. But we Indians traditionally like this type of design which is why Ford kept it for India.

Ford-EcoSport-4WD-spotted-testing-2In India, Ford is also not offering four wheel drive system but for International markets it is available only with 2.0 L petrol engine. As this export unit comes with four wheel drive system, it is powered by this engine. Ford offers four variants in USA – S, SE, SES and top end Titanium. The features list is similar to Indian model except for safety features.

The US spec model is powered by 1.0 L EcoBoost and 2.0 L engines. The 2.0 L engine produces 166 hp of power at 6,500 rpm and 202 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The 1.0 L engine puts out 124 hp of power at 6,000 rpm and 170 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm.  These engines are mated to 6 speed automatic gearbox.

Ford-EcoSport-4WD-spotted-testing-3In India, Ford is also offering 1.5 L diesel engine producing 99 hp of power at 3,750 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. This engine is mated to 5 speed manual gearbox. The US spec model is longer than Indian version as it is above 4 metre in length and slightly closer to ground also. We are not expecting Ford to offer four wheel drive system in India as it will increase price because of tax system.
