Ford’s small 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine has become very popular across the world, with its high power delivery and fuel efficiency. Now, the American automaker is about to introduce all-new Cylinder Deactivation technology to this engine which will enhance the fuel efficiency further. Also, this technology will lower the CO2 emission.
The 1.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine with Cylinder Deactivation technology is claimed to be launched in early 2018. Currently, this is used in the V6 and V8 motors. It ensures two cylinders are completely shut from the ignition cycles, when the engine faces partial load and thus reduces amount of fuel flow and increases fuel efficiency. But this is the first time, the Cylinder Deactivation technology is going to be used in a three-cylinder engine.

Ford introduced the Ecoboost technology to significantly downsize its engine. This helped in lowering the weight of the vehicle and to improve the fuel consumption as well, while the power output was not compromised. Presently, the 1.0-litre engine with Cylinder Deactivation technology is being tested at the European Research and Innovation Centre in Aachen, Germany.
The preliminary tests show that fuel efficiency has been increased by up to 6% and the CO2 emission lowered as well. Ford claims it won’t affect the performance of 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine. With the all new technology introduced to this engine, fuel flow to one of the three cylinders will be stopped when full power is not needed.
