Skoda Scala five-door hatchback will be sold in five engine options in Europe; previews brand’s new design language

Skoda Scala is the Czech Republican brand’s new offering for the compact car segment in the international markets. The Mladá Boleslav based brand says it provides a high level of active and passive safety, full LED headlights and tail lights, ample space for luggage and passengers, and a number of in-car features.

The hatchback will be retailed in five engine variants ranging between 90 PS and 150 PS, and Skoda ensures high degree of functionality and connectivity in the five-door model. Taking plenty of design influence from the Vision RS concept study showcased at the Paris Motor Show, the Scala will enter global markets in the first half of next year.

Claimed to set new benchmarks in the compact car segment with regards to technology, safety and design, the Skoda Scala is presented with new styling philosophy both inside and out. It is hidden under the curtains so far as the official camouflaged test mule suggests.

The name Scala, not to be confused with Renault’s Scala sedan, is derived from the Latin language meaning ‘stairs’ or ‘ladders’. Skoda says it is to represent the several rungs on the development ladder the company has climbed with the new hatchback. The exterior has multiple vertical slats up front along with sharp headlamp assembly, wide air inlets at lower bumper and clamshell bonnet.

The raked windshield leads on to floating roofline and a pronounced and sculpted rear end emphasising long wheelbase and big bootspace. The Scala has next development stage of the Škoda’s design language that will be seen across future models.

It is also the first model in Europe to bear ‘Skoda’ in block lettering on the tailgate instead of the logo. The Scala measures 4,362 mm in length, 1,793 mm in width, and stands 1,471 mm tall with wheelbase of 2,649 mm. It is almost closer to the Octavia and has knee room of 73 mm, rear elbowroom of 1,425 mm and rear headroom of 982 mm with segment-best 467 L trunk capacity that can be increased to 1,410 L.

It also gets first-ever rear dynamic indicator, an electrically retractable tow bar which can be folded out, an umbrella compartment in the driver side of the door, ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, and optional electric tailgate. We can expect some part of the Scala’s design to be used on the MQB A0 IN based compact SUV bound for 2020 in India.
