Volvo S90 India Launch in Q3 2016 and it will compete against Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class in the lucrative executive luxury sedan segment
Volvo S90 sedan debuted at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January and has replaced the S80 at the top of the brand’s hierarchy. It is one inch wider and has over four inches wheelbase compared to the S80 and will play a pivotal role in bringing back the Gothenburg-based manufacturer into contention with the German trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
In another exclusive report we can divulge that the new range-topping sedan will be launched for the Indian market in the third quarter of 2016. Initially tipped to arrive before the new generation XC90, Volvo delayed it for strategic reasons. That was a good move as the XC90 SUV received a world of applause in every market it ventured in. With Volvo’s painstaking tenure with the former owner ended, the Chinese automaker Geely stepped in to provide the much needed and credible investment plans.
From sacking models to drawing a new generation of technology-packed revolutions, the rejuvenated Swedish luxury car maker received our Luxury SUV of the Year Award courtesy of the latest flagship XC90 launched last year. The S90 would follow the lines closely with a similar design language and is built on the same platform with identical electronics.
It has plusher cabin with high quality equipment and trim pieces and the instrument panel is in accordance with the XC90. The S90 sedan is the second product to be constructed on the SPA(Scalable Platform Architecture) flexible platform after the XC90 crossover that underpins the V90 Wagon.
In agreement with the XC90 SUV, the front fascia is fitted with wider front grille, narrow headlamps with “Thor’s Hammer” Daytime Running Lights and has pronounced shoulder line running along both sides with a vertical taillight cluster wrapping around the trunk lid.
The sumptuous cabin features leather seats, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with metal speaker grilles and center speaker atop the dashboard, leather accents on center console and door panels, a colour display for instrument and navigation, metal finish for engine start/stop button and a touchscreen climate-control interface for rear passengers, rotary drive selector, matte-finish wood trim across dashboard, a large storage bin in adjacent to the car’s auto shifter and an advanced touchscreen infotainment system.
Advertised as the “world’s first in safety technologies and highly advanced semi-autonomous features”, the S90 sedan will have lane-departure prevention, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision warning and braking systems, Pilot Assist, a City Safety feature and large animal detection among several others. Volvo has confirmed offering only the four-cylinder engines for the S90 model.
The 2017 Volvo S90 will get power from the 2.0-litre turbo and supercharged inline four-cylinder engine churning out 315 hp and 295 lb-ft in a similar fashion to the XC90. It also comes equipped with T5 turbo-four 240 hp and 258 lb-ft 2.0-litre powertrain and a T8 plug-in hybrid engine. It will go up in the highly competitive executive luxury sedan segment against the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Jaguar XF.
