2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid is based on a new platform with heavily updated front fascia and more powerful hybrid system

In an exclusive report, we can divulge that Toyota Kirloskar Motor has begun taking bookings for the new generation Camry premium sedan in India. Scheduled to go on sale on January 18, the upcoming model will continue to compete against main rival Honda Accord Hybrid, along with Skoda Superb and VW Passat.

Skoda could introduce a facelifted Superb sometime next year to firm up the competition further while an updated Passat is also due in the near future. It is interesting to note that the latest Camry Hybrid existing in India was only introduced earlier this year. However, the brand new generation is a sizeable departure from the outgoing model.

The eight generation Toyota Camry Hybrid sits on the TNGA GA-K platform allowing for increased dimensions as well as lowered kerb weight that would aid in good handling capabilities. It is longer and wider along with having 49 mm increased wheelbase to ensure a more spacious cabin.

For optimal centre of gravity, it sits 35 mm lower to the ground as well. A few days ago, we showed you pictures of the upcoming sedan being tested on Indian roads ahead of gracing the showrooms. Another important fact is that the new Camry shares plenty with the Lexus ES 300h that was introduced in mid 2018 in India.

For general buyers, the biggest change they will notice is the drastically revised front fascia with bolder front grille, in-the-face horizontal slats, and sleeker headlamps. The rear in comparison does not look as dramatic as the front. The updated interior comprises of eight-inch touchscreen and seven-inch instrumentation display among other additions.

In the midst of Toyota selling a range of powertrains with the Camry in international markets, India will continue to stick with the 2.5-litre petrol engine linked to an electric motor. The updated hybrid system results in combined power output of 208 horsepower and is mated to a CVT automatic transmission. Expect the prices to hover around Rs. 38 lakh (ex-showroom).
