It was said earlier that in the existing financial year, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Limited (SMIPL) has been planning to reach new sales target of seven lakh units after enduring success in the previous fiscal by retailing over five lakh motorcycles and to meet the target it has quite a task in hand.
Suzuki’s sales have largely been driven by the Access 125 scooter and the arrival of the more premium Burgman Street 125 has helped the brand to recover from big volume drop since it entered the market in July 2018. The brand has widely reported to be introducing its first electric two-wheeler in India by 2020-21.
It was revealed in 2018 that the Japanese manufacturer is aiming to expand its footprint within the domestic market with new dealerships and touch points as part of achieving one million units by next year. While it’s clear Suzuki is relying heavy on scooters, it is no secret that the highly popular Gixxer range needs a big upgrade as its volume figures are not as good as it used to be.
Suzuki appears to be working on a quarter litre naked to compete against Yamaha FZ25 and it could spawn a faired version to rival Fazer 25. Additionally, a completely revised entry-level Gixxer series comprising of the naked Gixxer and Gixxer SF are coming very soon and in an exclusive report we can divulge that the trial production has commenced.
Amidst the increased competition from the modern 160 cc competitors and the recently launched Yamaha FZ and FZ-S V3, Suzuki is preparing to launch a thoroughly overhauled Gixxer with plenty of styling revisions while keeping its signature identity intact. It is expected to get new digital instrument console, split seat setup, redesigned exhaust and fuel tank, LED headlight, etc.
To adhere to the stringent safety standards, ABS will be offered as standard. Mechanical modifications to improve ride and handling can also be expected while the 154.9 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, currently producing 14.8 PS at 8,000 rpm and 14 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm, could be tuned to develop more power and torque.
