Once implemented, EURO IV will Reduce Fuel Efficiency of 2-wheeler because the war between emission and efficiency has remained a constant battle.

Two wheelers in India not so surprisingly are 75% of the vehicle population in our country. The growing demand and cheaper cost of ownership and zipping through traffic ability makes them a key survival weapon in our country. While manufacturer continue to impress customers with high efficiency numbers on paper, it won’t be possible anymore. However, a government official claims that those numbers are already irrelevant and it shouldn’t matter much if the economy, which is said to come down by 4-5 km shouldn’t affect customers much either.

Government has big plans for two-wheeler emissions standard as it want BSIV by April 2016 in new vehicles and older vehicles to comply by April 2017. Other safety rules will also follow for 2-wheelers in the year 2017 such as ABS, DRL and other methods that are in progress. Another plan the government has in mind that BSIV should specifically have Nox level permitted that will come with EURO V so pollution can be kerb very easily and very quickly. Other gases can continue to be emitted according Euro IV norms.

The norms set by the government, NOx emission limit for a BS-IV petrol car is.08 gram km while for a two-wheelers the emission is set at 0.39 gram km. The norms are stricter in Europe for two-wheelers produced of NOx emission limit are set at .07 grams/km and it will be implemented from January 1 2016. BS V norms in India for two-wheelers come in the year 2019. All of these rules came in power in the year 1976. After that, the share of two-wheelers has increased almost two fold since then.

While four-wheeler manufacturer have been using various techniques to run on two emissions two-wheeler manufacturer have been constant aligned with global and national standards as well. All vehicles from all manufacturer are set meet all standards that are set to launch in the next year and some manufacturer have done it in the year 2015 itself. Technically as the catalyzer size increases (which will be the way most companies will curb this problem) It does decreases the fuel efficiency.
