Great Wall Motors has reportedly decided to debut in Indian passenger vehicle space by 2021-22; begins hiring employees

Observing the vast potential in the Indian automotive industry in the coming years, new global manufactures are stepping in with huge investment. In 2019, Hyundai’s subsidiary Kia as well as SAIC-owned MG Motor are making their presence felt capitalising on the increased trend of purchasing SUVs across different price range.

Another global brand reportedly entering India is Great Wall Motors. The largest producer of SUVs and pickup trucks in China has decided to debut in our domestic market to target the highly crowded PV space. Speculations around Great Wall’s India premiere have been around for long as the company already has a Research and Development centre in Bengaluru for software coding of EVs and AI.

The Chinese brand based in Baoding, Hebei has started making moves ahead of predicted market entry around 2021-22 by hiring employees. Kaushik Ganguly, Head of Product Planning & Strategy at Maruti Suzuki, has been roped in to outline the strategy for Great Wall Motors according to several reports on the internet.

Great Wall Motors has conducted market studies in the last half a decade to get to a conclusion on whether to debut its passenger automotive business in India or not. The growth of market share for SUVs and the industry’s push towards electrification have been identified as main reasons behind the decision to enter India.

The evolution of Chinese car market has been there for the world to see in recent years but the local brands could not get a strong foothold in other hands especially Europe. With India being the fourth largest auto market in volume and is projected to overtake Japan by 2021, they are turning their attention towards making their business count here.

Great Wall Motors Company Limited retails passenger cars and trucks under the Great Wall brand and SUVs under Haval. Last year, it managed to record annual volume sales of just over one million units. We expect Great Wall to utilise its expertise with the Haval SUV brand to make an initial mark in India.
