BMW R5 is one of the iconic models in the history of motorcycles, which was introduced in 1936, and continued up to 1950. The twin cylinder 500 cc segment engine powered BMW motorcycle was a competitive motorcycle pretty popular in its own days. Now the German brand is paying homage to its iconic heritage model in its 80th anniversary by building similar model as concept although. The new model is christened as BMW R5 Hommage Concept.
The heritage inspired motorcycle has been unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy. The new motorcycle comes with a similarly designed fuel tank and frame, despite both being all new. The cylinder head covers and the front section of the crankcase have been designed in such way, which bring back the memory of the 1936 BMW R5 model. All these new parts come with a little bit of tweak albeit.
The BMW Motorrad has manufactured and fitted new forks to the R5 Hommage Concept which is similar to the genuine iconic model, but performs according to the modern specifications. Alongside the new suspension set up the brakes also come as new. The brake and clutch levers have been fitted at the outside of the handlebars.
The power source for the BMW R5 Hommage Concept motorcycle is an air cooled 500 cc supercharged twin cylinder boxer engine which has been sourced from the original R5 model. Therefore the new motorcycle comes with a genuine heart. The motor has been rebuilt completely although, as the old engine has been seriously damaged during the past races. Custom building duo Ronny and Benny Noren in Munich rebuilt the engine as per the design laid out by the BMW Motorrad design team.
The famous German automotive brand is celebrating its 100 years, and the R5 Hommage Concept is the BMW Motorrad’s part of the celebrations. The new motorcycle might be just concept model, but it is clearly visible that the brand has put lots of effort into making the new model paying homage the genuine one.
