BMW 3 Series Facelift greets public at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo; receives uprated engine with minor styling makeover

Launched last week at a starting price of Rs. 35.90 lakh with the M Sport top-end offering, the facelifted BMW 3 Series made its Auto Expo 2016 appearance as well. The German luxury car manufacturer has provided the 2016 BMW 3-Series solely with diesel variants and the petrol-equipped variants will arrive later this year.

The minor revisions to the sporty sedan comprises of an updated front fascia with new LED Daytime Running Lights, LED head lights, LED fog lamps, tail lamp cluster receiving ‘L’ shaped LED lights and a restyled front and rear bumpers. The 17-inch alloy wheels are newly designed with the cabin remaining identical in appearance but features new upholstery, chrome accents, ambient lighting and glossy surfaces.

The added equipment list on the new BMW 3-Series includes a Park Assist system, 8.8-inch high-definition touchscreen infotainment system, a new Heads Up Display with 3D graphics and Navigation system Professional with integrated GPS, etc. The carried-over features from its predecessor are six airbags, automatic dual zone air conditioning, Drive Experience Control Switch, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, Radio Professional, BMW Connected Drive and Applications, electrically adjustable front seats and so on.

The mechanical tweaks accompanying the cosmetic changes include an uprated diesel engine. The same TwinPower 2.0-litre four-cylinder DOHC turbocharged diesel engine found under the bonnet of the outgoing 3 Series has been upgraded to pump out a maximum power output of 190 hp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of peak torque between 1750 and 2500 rpm.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels through an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox and the fuel economy of the diesel engine is claimed at 18.88 kmpl. The updated 320d can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.2 seconds before going all the way up to 230 kmph. The are five driving modes to choose from which includes Comfort, Sport and Sport+.

The Eco mode, Auto Start/Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration techs aid in returning a better fuel economy. The top-of-the-line M Sport variant packs M leather steering wheel, signature M aerodynamic package with side skirts, and painted in an unique Estoril Blue metallic colour. The 2016 BMW 3 Series will be locally produced at the luxury auto maker’s manufacturing base in Chennai with around 50 per cent localisation of parts.
