With inability to meet stricter emission norms and catch up competition in terms of technology, Benelli decided to bid goodbye to these bikes from India

Benelli has just discontinued its two motorcycles from its India line up. The two bikes in question are the TNT 899 and the TNT R. These high end machines were not compliant with the BS-IV emission norms and hence, the Italian manufacturer decided to take these off the shelves. It is not clear at the moment whether Benelli has discontinued these motorcycles permanently or their BS-IV versions are awaited.

The Benelli TNT 899 is powered by an 898cc, inline three cylinder engine that has been linked to a six-speed gearbox. The fuel injected punchy motor sheds out a maximum power output of 118 bhp along with a peak torque of 88 Nm. The motorcycle was priced in the Indian two-wheeler market at Rs. 9.53 lakh.

On the other hand, the Benelli TNT R receives its power from a 1,131cc, inline three cylinder, liquid-cooled motor linked to a six-speed transmission as well. The mill develops respective power and torque outputs of 156 bhp and 120 Nm. The Benelli TNT R was available at the company’s dealerships across India at Rs. 11.86 lakh (both prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

In terms of technology as well, the Benelli TNT 899 and TNT R have been outdated and it was gradually becoming difficult for the two bikes to catch up with the competition. The company now has plans to launch a parallel twin 750cc motorcycle along with a 900cc triple cylinder bike that may replace the aforementioned models.

The design of the upcoming 900cc motorcycle will be new and its fuel tank has been lifted from the retired TNT 899. The motorcycle will ditch the under seat exhaust that will give way to a large end can, courtesy the Euro-IV emission norms.

On the other hand, the 750cc parallel twin bike rumoured to come as the Benelli 750GS, will use a detuned version of the engine that has been employed in the TNT 899.
