Leading auto manufacturers are planning to launch their electric two-wheelers starting next year

Two-wheelers will contribute to the majority of electric vehicles in the country in the coming years. The Government intends to make India a complete eco-friendly country in terms of vehicles by the year 2030. As a result of this, several auto manufacturers have started investing in such projects and many have their products ready as well.

All leading two-wheeler companies like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Yamaha Motor India, TVS Motor Company and Mahindra two-wheelers are already planning to launch their electric two-wheelers starting next year.

The electric two-wheeler segment in India is already present since long with companies like Hero Electric and Electrotherm that have been selling eco-friendly products for more than a decade now. It is only the core auto makers that are leading behind in this race. In comparison to four-wheelers, the electric two-wheelers will likely see a rapid growth as the former’s development is still at a very early stage. Regarding this, Sohinder Gill, Director of Society of manufacturers of Electric vehicles has said that with the cost of lithium ion batteries dipping over the years and improved technology has motivated several two-wheeler makers to work towards electric mobility. This will eventually help in providing more choices to the customers.

The country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp is readying electric two-wheelers at its Centre of Innovation & Technology in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The company has also invested in Ather Energy, a firm that will launch its performance electric scooter sometime next year. Besides Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto is also set to enter the electric two-wheeler territory before 2020. For this purpose, the brand will launch the Urbanite brand. The Pune-based auto maker has also revealed that it is working on a premium electric bike, the performance of which will be equivalent to Tesla in cars.

TVS Motor Company is also no behind in this race and its first electric scooter based on the Jupiter has been spotted testing few weeks back. Recently, a top honcho from the company has revealed that the company’s electric bike and scooter will land in the market soon.
