Bajaj Auto has today officially launched the Chetak Electric in the Indian market and is priced from Rs.1 Lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant and Rs 1.15 lakh for the top of the line Urban variant and the deliveries will commence this month. The base variant gets 2 colours – Cyber White & Citurs White and will come with drum brake at the front. The top of the line Urban range gets 4 colour options. The electrified scooter has been making compelling waves since its unveil and it is a radical departure compared to other two-wheelers within Bajaj’s domestic lineup.

The homegrown manufacturer has long stayed away from the scooter space, only to come back with the Chetak EV to make an aggressive statement. The eco-friendly model is the first of a range of battery-powered two-wheelers to raid the domestic market as finally, a mainstream brand has stepped up for the challenge.

The company has played a smart strategy in resurrecting an iconic nameplate for its electric venture. The Chetak name is back after decades of absence and the electric scooter stays true to its retro design with an upright riding position and smooth flowing lines echoing back to the past and it will certainly evoke emotions.

Despite the neo-retro styling, it is no shortage of modern equipment as smartphone connectivity, on-board diagnostics, cloud app-based functions with 1-year free-subscription, a fully digital instrument console, attractive LED Ring adorning the oval-shaped headlamp, ‘feather touch’ switchgear, and 12-inch cast alloy wheels add to the premium appeal.

The metal body and the overall fit and finish are right on point to justify the upscale presence. It has Battery Management System for seamless discharge, reverse gear mode for the ease of parking, regenerative braking tech that saves energy for an extended range, and two different riding modes.

The 2020 Bajaj Chetak EV is retailed through the Pro-Biking dealerships and Pune has been the first city to see the e-scooter on sale. Its reach will be expanded to Bengaluru and other major cities in the coming months.

The all-important electric powertrain comprises of a 4 kW electric motor that good enough to generate 16 NM of peak torque, and a Lithium-ion battery pack with IP67 rating. The Eco mode enables 95 km range while the Sport mode is claimed to be good enough for 85 km in regular real-world riding conditions on a single charge. It takes 5 hours to fully charge the battery and can be charged 25% in just 1 hour with a standard charger.
