Volkswagen design boss believes autonomous vehicles will end SUVs which are currently doing exceptional sales job across the world

SUV and crossovers are seeing an exceptionally good time at present all around the world. The popularity has increased so much, that even the automaker, who never built SUV or crossover are opting to grab a share in the segment. Take instance for Jaguar and Bentley, as these two British luxury automakers have already built F-Pace and Bentayga. Volkswagen’s Executive Director of Design Mr. Klaus Bischoff thinks end of SUV’s reign will be written by autonomous vehicles.

As the automakers across world are racing to get a share in the SUV segment, several automakers are working on research and development of autonomous driving technology. Volkswagen design chief believes, once autonomous driving technology takes centre stage, it will end SUV’s reign. He compares the large SUVs with dinosaurs and also says that, self-driving vehicles will break the increased demand of SUV.

As Mr. Bischoff puts it, though at present SUVs are on rise, but there will be a time, when they will be old and therefore vulnerable for extinction as well. He also pointed toward the growing importance of self-driving cars, and believes that autonomous cars will take centre stage in near future.

While Tesla, Volvo are the leading automakers working on autonomous driving technology, Volkswagen is also emphasizing on its own self-driving car project. The German automaker has already taken step to launch its first autonomous car in next 10 years. At 2016 Paris Motor Show Volkswagen has showcased ID concept which previews its first production five-door hatchback EV.

The Volkswagen ID concept is claimed to have an impressive 600km driving range. The company is also working on futuristic modular architecture for its upcoming electric cars, which will get autonomous technology as well. Also, this new platform will help Volkswagen to roll out multiple EVs, which are expected to come equipped with self-driving technology on-board with help from multiple laser scanners, cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors as well.
