Audi Aicon Concept Unveiled In Frankfurt; Previews Futuristic Autonomous Sedan

Audi Aicon Concept takes power from four electric motors; can run up to 800 km on a single charge

German premium luxury car manufacturer Audi has unveiled its Aicon concept at Frankfort Motor Show. The concept car previews a futuristic autonomous luxury sedan with exciting design and loads of high-end technology. This concept not only previews an upcoming self-driving sedan, it also demonstrates new drivetrain and suspension technology, digitalization and a refined luxurious interior mimicking first-class airline cabin.

The Audi Aicon concept sports signature Audi design elements, but blends them perfectly with a completely new theme. The concept incorporates a special LED lighting technology that is expected to produce a more advanced form of the current Matrix LED lighting from the brand. There is no conventional headlight or taillight. Instead, the concept uses a fully digital display surface made of hundreds of pixel segments.

The large hexagonal radiator grille area with the brand logo and a front splitter brings the conventional touch to this concept. Moving to the side profile of the concept, it appears very edgy and muscular. The large 26-inch wheels, flared wheel arches, crisp lines that runs through the glass area are the design elements that make it look attractive. Instead of a conventional sedan look, the concept gets a coupish appearance. Rear fascia of the Audi Aicon gets a wide fully digital display incorporating hundreds of pixel segments and there is a chunky bumper as well.

Dimensionally, Audi Aicon concept appears pretty large. It measures 5,444 mm in length, 2,100 mm in width and 1,506 mm in height. The 3,470 mm of wheelbase is 240 mm longer than the Audi A8L. It will offer a total luggage capacity of 660-litre. The production model will offer very spacious feeling to the occupants.

Inside the cabin, there is no steering wheel reflecting the idea of a fully autonomous vehicle that would use voice command or tapping on the touchscreen panel at the dashboard to take instruction. It will come as a four-door model with 2+2 seating layout. The seats can be adjusted according to the occupant’s preference. Overall, the concept has been designed keeping focus on comfort and communication of the occupants during long journeys and the theme is reflected inside the cabin of Audi Aicon.

On the powertrain front, Audi Aicon concept uses four electric motors, each powering a wheel. Combined, the electric powertrain kicks out 353 PS of peak power and 550 Nm of peak torque. The automaker claims, this concept is able to run up to 800 km on a fully charged battery. It uses pneumatic spring and damper units to offer smooth journey experience on any road surface.
