The Alphard is a showcase of Toyota’s excellence in high-end products, likely to be introduced in India soon via CBU route

Capitalising on the success story of the Innova through its two generations, Toyota Kirloskar Motor may consider launching the Alphard MPV in the near future in India. Positioned way above the Innova Crysta and Fortuner in its international lineup, the Alphard is sold in select markets that appeal for sophisticated luxury-based MPVs.

Toyota has a dedicated fanbase in India and it has been well utilised for growth in the premium segment with the likes of Innova Crysta and Fortuner. While its mass-market models have floundered to attract customers, the partnership with Suzuki resulting in the sharing of models with Maruti Suzuki will be of much help.

Moreover, Toyota cannot stray away from consolidating its market share in the premium space as it has upmarket SUVs like C-HR and Rush crossover along with the Alphard MPV. The latter comes with an eight-seater layout and it also has a hybrid drivetrain option similar to the new generation Camry Hybrid launched in India recently.

Indian government’s decision to allow 2,500 units of any car irrespective of the body type without homologation may come in handy if Toyota wants to sell the Alphard in limited quantity. Moreover, the FAME 2.0 scheme may have a positive impact on the Alphard if it goes the hybrid route.

In several countries, the Alphard takes power from a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine producing 301 PS and 361 Nm, and is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. In short, the Alphard is brimmed with technologies to the highest possible level from Toyota and it could cost nearly twice as much as the Innova Crysta.

It comes with a spacious cabin with a massive trunk capacity with or without folding the rear seats while the central door can be automatically operated. Sitting in the middle of the dashboard is touchscreen infotainment and is complemented by leather seat upholstery and use of high-quality materials all around.

The Alphard also gets a suite of driver assistance and safety technologies including Pre-Collision System, Car Start Notification, Lane Tracing Assist and Lane Departure Alert from the Sense P package.

Word on the internet is that it could spawn a Lexus cousin in the near future.
