Toyota Camry TRD has aero kit developed by Calty while the chassis is TRD tuned for increased performance and handling
Toyota has unveiled the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD versions as the sedans have become sportier with “distinct exhaust note” and ability to tame corners better due to their racing pedigree according to the brand. The styling with aerodynamic enhancements was created by Calty, Toyota’s design studio in the United States, while chassis is tuned for performance by Toyota Racing Development (TRD).
The Japanese manufacturer boldly claims the spurred up sedans are “track tuned”. The TRD badge is synonymous with performance-based and hardcore off-roading SUVs and pickup trucks. The expertise is now brought into the sedan lineup as the regular Camry and Avalon are tuned to have greater agility, precision and body control with captivating design and everyday use.
The TRD variant comprise of all the standard equipment from the Camry SE grade and Avalon XSE grade with exclusive TRD enhancements and tuning on chassis and other departments. Both Camry TRD and Avalon TRD take power from the 3.5-litre V6 engine making 301 hp and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with flappy paddle shifting and sport mode.
The powertrain gets a tuned cat-back dual exhaust system to enable “throatier idle and acceleration sound”. Toyota says the TRD engineers have developed the dynamic characteristics via extensive testing at its Arizona Proving Ground, TMC Higashi-Fuji Proving Ground in Japan and MotorSport Ranch in Texas.
The underbody is thicker for increased torsional rigidity and the coil springs are lowered by 0.6 inches for optimised center of gravity. The shock absorbers are also modified while the 19 x 8.5-inch matte black alloy wheels complement the suspension package with improved steering precision, body control and handling.
The bigger front brakes with 12.9-inch diameter rotors and dual-piston calipers are said to ensure more direct feedback. In the Camry TRD, the 19 x 8.5-inch matte black alloy wheels are half inch wider than on the XSE grade and are paired with Bridgestone Potenza 235/40R19 summer tyres.
As for the Calty enhanced exterior, the Camry TRD features gloss black front grille with sporty mesh insert, black exterior badging and polished stainless steel TRD exhaust tips. It is made available in dual-tone Supersonic Red, Windchill Pearl and Celestial Silver Metallic paint schemes.
On the inside, the Camry TRD gains contrast red trim along with Black Sport SofTex-trimmed front seats with fabric inserts, red accents, red TRD embroidered headrests and seatbelts, leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, gear knob with embossed TRD logo and TRD floor and trunk mats.
The aero kit includes front splitter, side aero skirts, trunk lid spoiler and rear diffuser alongside red pinstriping, red painted brake calipers, and red TRD badging. The TRD sedans also come with a suite of standard Toyota Safety Sense-P including pre-collision Braking. It is important to note that both the TRD variants will be available only in limited numbers in the US.
