2020 Maruti Suzuki Celerio is expected to get the same 1.2-litre K-series BS6 petrol engine borrowed from Baleno, likely to be based on the heartect platform

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) launched the new-gen Wagon R as the first launch of this year and as expected, 2019 Wagon R shaking up the sales pecking order dominated by its own siblings. The Wagon R has been around for nearly two decades and the new version is the most advanced yet with a revamped exterior and interior along with a brand new bigger 1.2-litre K-series powertrain much to everyone’s surprise.

Last July, Maruti revealed that nine out of fifteen cars in the domestic lineup meet the frontal, off-set-frontal, side impact and pedestrian crash tests. The models are S Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Dzire, Swift, Ignis and Celerio. The latter is due for a brand new generation in the not-so-distant future. As per a new report, Maruti Suzuki coming up with the New-generation version of Celerio in next 12-18 months and it is codenamed as YNC.

Maruti Suzuki introduced Celerio in 2014 and it received a mid-life facelift in 2017 while a separate X range also went on sale. The small hatchback can be recognised with making the AMT appeal for masses and it will likely face a heavy upgrade to firmly compete against Hyundai Santro, Tiago and Kwid.

The Maruti Celerio managed to garner over one lakh unit sales in 2018 despite having to deal with increased competition, especially from the 2018 Santro. The Korean hatchback was only introduced in October 2018 and is expected to cause severe headaches to its rivals through this year including the existing Celerio. However, as part of counteracting, Maruti Suzuki could introduce Swift’s 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine into the Celerio range as well with BSVI compliance and other premium features.

Just as the recently launched New Wagon-R, the K12 engine may get 83 hp and 113 Nm outputs with manual and AMT choices. The interior of the next-gen Celerio is expected to see a major upgrade as well with the inclusion of a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system and several standard safety features. Just as the 2019 Wagon-R, it could be based on the fifth-generation Heartect platform enabling bigger proportions.

The current 1.0-litre K series engine producing 67 PS of power and 90 Nm of torque may continue in the low and mid-level variants as in the 2019 Wagon R. It is connected to a 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options. The CNG version, on the other hand, churns out 59 PS and 78 Nm with 31.79 kmpl claimed mileage.
