The Explorer is based on a new rear-wheel-drive platform and the SUV come with lots of new safety features along with the option of four-cylinder and V6 engines
Ford has officially revealed the sixth-generation of Explorer at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The company has given a new rear-wheel-drive platform for the Explorer as earlier models were front-wheel driven but the new model retained the monocoque chassis and it is 51 kgs lighter than its predecessor.
The new generation of Explorer gets an evolutionary exterior design theme as the front get big grille with Ford logo in the middle, which extends towards the headlamps. The front bumper also gets a new design theme with skid plates at the front and rear. The SUV comes with new tail lamps and revised design for the bumper with dual exhaust.
The interior of Explorer is completely different from the outgoing model as they have improved quality of materials and given a premium feel. The top-spec model comes with a 12.3 inch fully digital instrument cluster, which gets lots of customizing options and the company has given a 10.1-inch touch screen infotainment system.
But the integration of the new infotainment system into the dashboard is not good because it looks like a tablet attached to the centre console. The Explorer is loaded with features like leather seats, twin-panel sunroof, 10-way adjustable front seats, 14 speaker B&O audio system, ambient lighting, heated front and rear seats, a wireless smartphone charger and more.
Ford has given a sliding option for the second row, which makes it easier for passengers to access the third row. One of the things, the company focused with new Explorer is safety as the SUV come with standard Pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind spot information and automatic high-beam headlights.
The Explorer also comes with optional adaptive cruise control, reverse brake assist along with Active Park Assist 2.0 with a parallel and perpendicular park. Ford is offering lots of engine options with Explorer as the entry-level model will be 2.3 L EcoBoost engine with 304 PS and 420 Nm, mated to a 10-speed auto gearbox and four-wheel drive system, customers can also opt for V6 engine also.
