Tata Motors is reportedly working on an all-electric Tiago hatchback; could be the homegrown brand’s first EV upon launch

Tata Motors has earned positive response with the Tiago hatchback and currently the homegrown auto major is working on an all-electric version of the stylish and sporty hatchback. Upon launch, this could be the first all-electric car from the automaker. The company is yet to make any official statement about the EV, but it is working on the electric mobility for quite some time.

For last couple of years, Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC) based in UK, has been working on the all-electric powertrain technology and it is believed to have made significant progress. Expect the reportedly under work all-electric Tata Tiago hatchback to be powered by the electric powertrain made by the TMETC.

Interestingly, Tata Motors has displayed the electric version of Tata Bolt hatchback earlier, but that didn’t enter production. Therefore, the upcoming Tiago EV is a very crucial product from the brand. Tiago’s low cost platform will help the automaker to keep the pricing competitive even despite the high price of electric powertrain. Upon launch, this could target the global markets as well alongside the domestic market.

Currently, among the Indian automakers Mahindra has established itself as a pioneer in EV with models like e2o and e-Verito. But, none of them has garnered desired sales result. On the other hand, Tiago is a very popular and bestselling product of the brand. In that case, an all-electric Tiago would do pretty well.

Indian government is taking initiatives to encourage electric mobility and it also has an ambition to electrify the entire Indian mobility by 2035. In that case, Tata Motors’ Tiago EV could play a very important role. Interestingly, apart from the Tiago EV project, Tata is also working on Nano EV and a test mule of the car has been already spied near Coimbatore. App-based cab service provider Ola is expected to provide a market for the Nano EV.
