Petes Oberndorfer hinted that the company has already started working on this performance car but he didn’t reveal much detail about the project

Audi R8 is currently the flagship product of the company but the German manufacturer is looking to expand it further. When Mercedes announced its plan of hypercar project, Audi also confirmed that they are not ruling out the possibility of a hypercar with four ring logo on it. But since then we haven’t heard much about the project.

Audi is currently working on EVs which is the latest trend of the industry. The German manufacturer is expected to reveal production version of e-tron crossover soon and the sales will begin later this year or early next year. Among other EV models currently under development include production model of Aicon autonomous concept and e-tron GT for enthusiasts.

Audi-R8-e-Tron-2.jpgAudi global boss of product and technology communications, Peter Oberndorfer said that the company has ambitious goals for performance EVs. One of the problems currently they have is with batteries as current lithium ion batteries is capable of giving excellent performance but range is a problem  and in coming years we can expect it to improve.

Once the battery technology improves, the company might consider building an electric hypercar to rival Tesal Roadster and Rimac C_Two. Peter suggest that to solve range problem, they must ditch current lithium-ion batteries for solid state batteries which can offer great range but such batteries are not yet mainstream and it will take some time to reach market.

Audi-R8-e-Tron-1.jpgPeter Mertens development boss at Audi said that sold-state batteries are still few years away but I think it would be an advantage if it will be developed, so batteries are getting lighter and need less space. In EVs batteries are placed between axles and its low which could benefit sportscar as the centre of gravity won’t be high.

Petes Oberndorfer hinted that the company has already started working on this performance car but he didn’t reveal much detail about the project. We can expect Audi to reveal a concept based on the upcoming electric hypercar soon which will shed more light on the project. BMW might also develop a hypercar by the M-division which is also on the cards.
