Yamaha Aerox 155 for India could use the 155 cc VVA liquid-cooled engine producing a maximum power output of 14.8 horsepower at 8,000 rpm
Recent reports emerged on the internet suggest that Yamaha Motor has been working on a maxi-scooter for the domestic market but no more details on it were available until now. Adding fuel to the fire, a type approval certificate indicates that it could be the Aerox 155. The Aerox 155 is a blend of a motorcycle and a scooter with the styling of the former and the convenience of the latter.
The Yamaha Aerox line of moto-scooters is extremely popular in the Southeast Asian markets. However, in India, it could create a niche of its own as we only have the maxi-scooter space. The Japanese manufacturer unveiled the 155 cc version of the Aerox at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia back in late 2016.
Less than a year ago, the Yamaha Aerox 155 was subjected to a redesign. The Aerox nameplate has been on sale in Europe since 1997 as well. The type approval further gives away the dimensional details of the Aerox 155 as it has an overall length of 1,980 mm, a width of 700 mm and it stands 1,150 mm tall with a wheelbase length of 1,350 mm.
The Gross Vehicle Weight is rated at 276 kilograms. The Yamaha Aerox 155 has several commonalities with the Yamaha R15 V3 including the powertrain. The 155 cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine with Variable Value Actuation technology should be good enough to produce a maximum power output of 14.8 horsepower at 8,000 rpm.
The Aerox 155 is offered in different engine tunes based on the markets (including a 125 cc BlueCore version) and for India, the type approval certificate indicates 11 kW peak torque (14.8 hp). Yamaha could position the moto-scooter above the existing maxi-scooters in the local market and it could get Bluetooth connectivity with smartphone application based functions.
It will be rolled out of Yamaha’s manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu according to the document. We can expect the launch timeline to be late 2021 or it could be introduced in the early stages of 2022. The company appears to be developing a more premium version of the R15 V3, dubbed the R15 M.
