Tata Motors will launch at least 5 SUVs in next 12-18 months in India including Harrier Automatic

Tata Motors has definitely come a long way in the last few years, from fielding unsuccessful products like the Indigo Marina and Tata Aria, it now sells some really popular vehicles like the Nexon, Tiago and Harrier in the Indian market.

What’s even better is that the company has even planned to expand its SUV portfolio with some more products, that will launch by late 2020 and beyond. Like most of the recent Tata SUVs, the upcoming Tata SUVs in India will have a new design philosophy, powerful engines, modern platform and transmission options.

1. Tata Buzzard

The Tata Buzzard is a 7-seater version of the Harrier SUV. It debuted at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and will launch by the end of the current year in India. The Tata Buzzard likely to launch with a different name, possibly Cassini. It looks a lot like the Harrier but is a full 63 mm longer, which helps it have a fairly spacious third row of seats. Powering the new model is a more powerful version of the Fiat sourced 2.0-litre Kryotec engine that powers the Harrier.

Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox. Underpinning the Buzzard is the same OMEGA platform that debuted on the Harrier. This will go on to rival a lot of cars in India, including upcoming 7-seater MG Hector and Mahindra XUV500. It is expected to have a starting price of Rs 14 lakh.

2. Production Tata H2X

The Tata H2X also debuted at the Geneva Motor Show 2019 and will launch sometime next year as Its production version is expected to be shown at the Auto Expo 2020. It will be a sub-4-metre micro-suv that will go on to rival models like the Maruti Ignis and the Mahindra KUV100.

As with all the recent Tata models, the H2X is designed as per the company’s Impact 2.0 design language and impresses us with its bold looks. It’s underpinned by the ALFA architecture, which will debut on the Tata Altroz late this year. Like the Altroz, the production H2X will have a 1.2-litre petrol engine. A diesel engine option could be given a miss due to the fast falling popularity of small diesel cars and the expected increased cost of the engine after the BSVI emission norms kick in.

The third SUV on our list is one of the most eagerly awaited upcoming Tata SUVs in India. Launched earlier this year, the Tata Harrier has been off to a good start and has quickly established a decent fan base in the country. The Harrier offers a lot on many counts – it has a great design, high-quality cabin and even has an adequately powerful engine.

Plus, you get the Land Rover L550-derived platform, which gives it great dynamics. Back at the time of the launch, the company had clearly said it has no plans of launching a 4×4 version of the SUV due to low demand and even an automatic transmission is something that the company was still pondering over.

Now, however, the company has decided to offer the Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission on the Harrier as soon as it debuts on the Buzzard. What’s more, the manufacturer even plans to come up with a 4×4 variant to satisfy the few enthusiasts who would want to upgrade from their capable but dated Tata Safari 4×4. The launch of the Harrier AT is likely to take place in the first half of next year. Prices could be as much as a lakh rupees higher than the comparable manual variant.

4. Tata Nexon Facelift

The Tata Nexon has been available since September 2017 and has been successful with outclassing the Ford EcoSport. It enjoys a huge fan base, which is due to its robust built, powerful petrol and diesel engines, spacious and feature-loaded cabin, and attractive pricing.

However, the launch of the Mahindra XUV300 and the upcoming introduction of the Hyundai Venue would can the popularity of the Nexon. Recognizing this, the company has started working on a facelift for its best-selling SUV.

The Tata Nexon facelift will come with an updated front and rear fascia, which should carry revised lights and bumpers. Even the front grille could witness a minor change. In the side profile, the alloy wheels will be new, while even the interior will get some revisions. The Nexon could even get some more features, while the engine options will remain the same. However, they will be updated to meet BSVI norms.

5. Tata Blackbird

Tata Motors is also working on another new SUV to compete in the compact SUV segment. The Tata Blackbird will be slotted between the Nexon and the Harrier in the lineup and will be pitted against the Hyundai Creta and the upcoming Kia SP2i. It will be underpinned by the ALFA architecture from the Altroz and H2X. However, in terms of design, it will be closer to the Harrier than the Altroz.

The Tata Blackbird likely to offer a long list of features that will include an electric sunroof, leather seat upholstery, cruise control, automatic headlamps and wireless charging. Engine options are expected include updated versions of the turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel motors of the Neon.
