6New Hyundai Santro

santro concept

Santro has been a phenomenal product from the South Korean auto manufacturer. It began its journey in the country during the company’s initial days in the domestic market and became popular in very short span after launch. It’s compact and stylish design and affordability made it one of the bestselling cars in the country. Despite being such a successful car, Hyundai later discontinued it. But now, the company is preparing to re-launch the Santro in a new avatar. The car is expected to hit the showrooms sometime during second half of next year.

Hyundai has already discontinued the i10 from production to make way for the new generation Santro. It is not clear if the next-gen Santro will bear the same name or not, but one thing is clear. It will come sporting a completely new and upmarket look, in line with the brand’s current crop of cars.

It is expected to come following the brand’s latest Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. As the original Santro competed against the rivals like Zen and Alto, the upcoming new generation model will challenge the entry level segment leader Alto 800 and Renault Kwid as well.

The detail about the design of Santro is yet to be disclosed. But expect it to feature an upmarket and visually attractive design. It is expected to come sporting a large new look front grille instead of the original Santro V shaped compact grille. There could be plenty of chrome garnishing in an attempt to enhance the appeal, while the headlamps could come sharp looking. At the side profile, it would boast blackened glass area, stylish alloy wheels. The rear too is likely to come with compact taillights.

Inside the cabin, the Hyundai Santro is expected to come wearing a stylish and upmarket vibe compared to its rivals. With the Renault Kwid already offering a touchscreen infotainment system in the top-end variant, the new generation Santro too is likely to adopt similar strategy to lure the entry level customers, while the seat and upholstery material too would come of improved quality. Expect it to offer decent space and comfort to the occupants compared to the old Santro.

On the powertrain front, the new generation Hyundai Santro is expected to be available with a 1.1-litre iRDE petrol engine and there will be the tried and tested 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine as well. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual gearbox and an AMT as well, as the South Korean auto major plans to introduce dual-pedal transmission setup across its entire range. Upon arrival, the Santro is likely to challenge Tata Tiago, Datsun RediGo, Maruti Suzuki Celerio also.
