Brands like Maruti Suzuki, Tata and Kia are expected to introduce new CNG SUVs over the course of this calendar year in response to the popularity of the bi-fuel tech. Here we have explained about the CNG iterations of the Brezza, Fronx, Punch and Sonet:

1. Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG:

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG was revealed at the Auto Expo a couple of months ago. Its prices will be announced in the coming months. The 1.5L petrol engine is expected to be available in both MT and AT guises – making it the first compact SUV to boast such options.

2. Maruti Suzuki Fronx CNG:

Rumours indicate that Maruti Suzuki will bring in a CNG version of the Fronx sooner rather than later. The compact SUV coupe will go on sale next month and a CNG variant could be offered from the word go. It will feature a 1.2L four-cylinder petrol engine and will help the Fronx to have an expansive range.

3. Tata Punch CNG:

At the biennial 2023 Auto Expo, Tata unveiled the CNG-spec Punch and Altroz. Both are powered by a 1.2L three-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. They will go on sale later this year. One of the key features is the presence of two CNG tanks arranged in parallel to each other to not intervene with the bootspace.

4. Kia Sonet CNG:

Only a few days ago, the Kia Sonet was spotted with an emission test kit fuelling the speculations that the CNG version is under development. It will likely be launched in the coming months with BSVI stage 2 compliance. Judging by the spy images, the Kia Sonet CNG could be offered in its X-Line trim, powered by a 1.0L three-cylinder turbo petrol engine.

If it turns out to be the case, expect it to produce lesser power and torque. Compared to the regular petrol-only variant, the price of the CNG iteration could be up by around Rs. 1 lakh. The powertrain may only be paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Since the Sonet shares its engine lineup with the Venue, it will be interesting to see if Hyundai decides to add such a variant or not.
