Hyundai Elantra Sport gets power from 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged T-GDi engine making 204 hp and 265 Nm of torque

Hyundai, or let’s say any Asian, European or American manufacturer, has the knack of introducing home-market specific products that are normally won’t be sold elsewhere. Some of the vehicles will have different nomenclatures for the same product in different locations across the globe as traditionally followed by the automakers.

One such product is the Elantra sedan which is known in its home soil as the Avante. In India, the Elantra competes against the Chevrolet Cruze, Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla as a midsize executive sedan but Hyundai doesn’t shy away from using it as a sport-oriented sedan for the Korean marketplace.

Hyundai has launched the Avante Sport, or Elantra Sport for our clear understanding, in Korea and is based on the upcoming generation of Elantra which is about to get launched in India later this year. The major mechanical change is the uprated 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged T-GDi engine that generates a maximum power output of 204 hp and 265 Nm of peak torque.

The transmission duties are dealt by a standard six-speed manual gearbox while customers can opt for the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission as well. It is rated to sprint from standstill to 100 kmph in an impressive eight seconds. For the sporty handling, the rear has been fitted with a multi-link suspension.

The cosmetic updates going in sync with the mechanical revisions are a huge gapping hexagonal grille embossed with ‘turbo’ badge and Hyundai emblem in the middle, aggressive front bumper with large air intakes, sleeker LED Daytime Running Lights, LED fog lamps and headlamps with red accents, 18-inch prominent alloy wheels and new side skirts.

If buyers want the Hyundai Elantra Sport to be more muscular, the ‘Extreme Package’ could fit the bill. It sports a spoiler, new tail lamps with LED inserts, bumper with faux diffusers, chrome garnished twin exhaust pipes and new set of alloy wheels to name a few.
