2020 Mahindra Thar will be safer, more powerful and will have an evolutionary version of the iconic Jeep Wrangler-like design

Mahindra and Mahindra are busy with the development of the 2020 Mahindra Thar. The next generation of the iconic SUV has already been caught testing and based on these spy shots, a digital rendering of the next-gen Thar has come up online. The 2020 Mahindra Thar will have an evolved version of the current vehicle’s iconic Jeep Wrangler-like design.

As has been the case with the current Thar and even models like the Mahindra Major, the next-gen Thar will have the characteristic seven-slat grille that will be flanked with round headlights. The fender will feature turn indicators, while even the flat bonnet and an upright windscreen will continue to be on offer.

However, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will look more modern in spite of carrying over many of the current design details. This will be due to a slightly sleeker design, a new bumper, and a more roundish fascia. The company could offer LED headlights instead of halogen bulbs, while even the indicators could get LEDs.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be bigger in dimensions than the current model. Other than this, the next-gen model is expected to offer better vehicle dynamics due to the new Magna chassis that will be shared with the next-gen Scorpio. The new Thar will also have better construction to meet the advanced safety norms that come into play this year.

The 2020 Mahindra Thar will offer driver’s airbags, rear parking sensors, ABS, and speed alert system as a part of the standard equipment list. Optional features could include a passenger airbag and a rear parking camera. The new model could even have a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Powering the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be a new 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It will produce a maximum power of 140 hp and a peak torque of 300 Nm.
