As was being expected, the 2020 Mahindra Thar retains the classic look that has been famous for many years now. However, it will be built on a new platform that will offer better safety. The front-end of the new Thar gets the same iconic look but looks fresher due to a more flush front face. Also, the fenders are currently devoid of plastic cladding but will get a more rugged look in the finished product.
Another highlight of the 2020 Mahindra Thar is its increased dimensions. A look at the test mule is enough to figure out that the new vehicle is longer, wider, and even a bit taller than the current version. It also gets bigger wheels and has a higher ground clearance. These changes should lead to a more spacious cabin.
Talking about the interior, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will get an entirely new dashboard and a new steering wheel. This will help the company offer airbags for both the front occupants. The steering wheel will come from the Mahindra parts bin and will have a premium look. Also, the company will have to offer rear parking sensors, front seatbelt reminder, high-speed alert and ISOFIX child seat mounts to meet the new norms.
Mahindra is playing it safe by not changing the basic design of the vehicle. As we said, the 2020 Mahindra Thar sports the same iconic look that was made famous by the models like the Mahindra Major. Thanks to the increased dimensions, however, the Thar will look a lot more similar to the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon’s 3-door version than the current model. Also, the plastic parts seen on the test mule, like the wing mirrors, front indicators, and the tail lamps will be replaced with more modern units for a fresher look.
Under the hood, the 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to get a updated engine that will be offered in a BSVI-compliant format. This will help the lifestyle SUV meet the upcoming emission norms. The company is expected to use an updated version of the 2.2-litre diesel engine that will come mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Power will be sent to all four wheels through a 4WD system that will even offer lockable differentials and a low ratio transfer the case. Lastly, the new model is also expected to get a hardtop version that will help it rival the Force Gurkha.
