2019 Hyundai Kona Electric gets a bigger infotainment and battery warmer system in the Limited and Ultimate grades

Following the Kona Hybrid, Hyundai has announced new updates for the 2020 MY Kona Electric. The biggest inclusion has to the Navigation System Display that replaces the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system for a bigger and more intuitive 10.25-inch unit in the top-of-the-line Ultimate grade. It features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity while the battery warmer system is standard on the Limited and Ultimate trims as well.

The South Korean auto major says it will aid in preventing excessive long battery charging intervals, especially in cold ambient conditions. There is a specific Winter Mode that helps in the battery warmer minimising power losses due to colder temperatures. In the United States, the Kona Electric is offered with a 64 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that works with an electric motor.

The system is capable of producing 201 horsepower and 394 Nm of peak torque. The Kona Electric is rated with a driving range of 415 km by the EPA while the MPGe stands at 132 in city, 108 in highway and 120 when the combined scenario is taken into account. Hyundai also sells the 2020 Kona EV with Level 2 onboard charging system with 7.2 kW rate of charge.

The Level 3 quick charger, SAE Combo charging port, replenishes the electric crossover to 80 per cent at the rate of 100 kW charge in just 54 minutes. The Kona Electric sold in the US is produced at Korea and is available in California and other western and northeastern states.

Hyundai introduced the Kona Electric in July 2019 in India as the country’s first electric crossover and it has been well-received among customers. It has a claimed driving range of 452 km on a single charge and uses a 39.2 kW lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The 2.8 kW portable charger is used to get back the EV to full charge in 19 hours and a DC fast charger reduces the time to just 57 minutes to reach 80 per cent.
