The Japanese manufacturer is eyeing upmarket buyers with the refreshed Yaris in the US; gets powered by an assortment of engine options

Toyota has lined up an updated Yaris sedan for this year’s New York International Auto Show. It has a complicated history in North American shores and in fact received its nameplate just recently from being called the iA and all the Scion story that goes with it.

It is a complete different to what we are going to see in India. The Yaris C-segment sedan, which has its bookings opened already, will be offered for customers next month with a commercial launch and it will compete in a hotly-contested segment run by Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City and Hyundai Verna.

Back to the Yaris in the US, where it goes on sale this fall, Toyota has concentrated on adding new trims to the sedan as the L variant will be joined by LE and XLE in a bid to add more buying choices to the customers. As for the exterior, it comes with a huge grille with new mesh replacing the horizontal slats of its predecessor.

The Japanese manufacturer is eyeing upmarket buyers with the refreshed Yaris and it offers several interior trims they can choose from. Automatic climate control unit is provided as standard fitment while rain sensing wipers, ambient illumination and Automatic LED headlamps can be ticked off from the options list.

In a similar case to the LE trim, the XLE also comes equipped with turn indicator mounted Outside Rear View Mirrors, rear lip spoiler and heated outside mirrors, etc. The standard equipment list has some of the very essential bits like push button start/stop and it accompanies smart key entry in the LE and XLE customers.

Low-speed pre-collision system is another feature offered as standard while there is a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system taking care of in-car connectivity and entertainment duties. There is a variety of engine options provided including a 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor which is good enough to produce a maximum power output of 106 horsepower and 140 Nm of peak torque.

It can be connected with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. It weighs nearly 1,130 kilograms thanks to the chassis derived from Mazda on the manual transmission equipped model.
